Where can we find Casa de les Punxes?
Very close to our boutique hotel in Barcelona there is one of the most peculiar and emblematic buildings in the city: the Casa de les Punxes also known as Casa Terrades, which is located between the streets of Roselló, Bruc and Avinguda Diagonal. It is in the center of the city, very close to other important tourist attractions such as la Sagrada Familia, la Pedrera and Casa Batlló, all in walking distance from our hotel in Barcelona.
The story of a family and a very special house
Casa de les Punxes, was designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1905 for the Terrades family, who wanted a house for each one of the three sisters. After being closed for more than a 100 years, it has finally opened its doors to the public for both residents and tourists. In the present, the building that was declared a “Historical Monument of National Interest” in 1976 is now privately owned with space for different offices and apartments.
The architecture and emblematic style
The building was built in the shape of a medieval castle and counts with six pointed towers, which gave the name “Casa de les Punxes” (House of Spikes). The building consists of three houses, a house for each one of the Terrades sisters, blending the three houses to look like a single building with three entrances.
Casa de les Punxes stands out for its modern and neo-Gothic style that can be appreciated in the towers, especially in the ground floor. The other floors are plainer, due to the red bricks and multiple balconies and windows. And finally on the top floor, we find ostentatious tiles that reflect the legend of Sant Jordi.
